A week to celebrate the love of learning

27/05/2008 9:21:00 AM
Schools in Bathurst are celebrating their love of learning during this year’s Education Week.

The week was launched at Bathurst Regional Council by Mayor Paul Toole yesterday and finishes this Sunday.

Both Cr Toole and School Education Director Peter Harvey agreed this year’s theme ‘love of learning’ was appropriate.

“It reinforces the commitment of all our staff, teachers and parents to public education in the Bathurst area,” cr Toole said.

“It’s an opportunity for business and community leaders to go into schools and see what occurs.

“I’m very proud of what our schools do and what we achieve in our region.”

Cr Toole said there were over 60 schools in the Bathurst region with strong literacy and numeracy programs.

Speaking at an Education Week launch for the first time as director, Mr Harvey said teachers in Bathurst were of the highest quality and passionate about what they do.

Kelso High captains Gemma Lord and Gerry Beckers said Education Week was an opportunity to share their learning experiences with other schools.

“Education Week brings to light the importance of public education,” Gemma said.

Other guests at the launch included representatives from Bathurst Regional Council, school principals and captains, Member for Bathurst Gerard Martin, and representatives from TAFE, Charles Sturt University and Bathurst Rotary and Lions Clubs.

The launch was hosted by Bathurst High captains Aisea Langi and Gyan Yankovich and entertainment was provided by combined schools flute and clarinet ensemble, Bemused.

One event held across the state during Education Week is Principal for a Day, when business and community leaders and media professionals step behind the principal’s desk.

The stand-in principals experience what running a school is like as they hold discussions with teachers and principals, take classes and talk to parents.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
