Local mum Angela Robertson has urged the community to find out more about anaphylaxis for Allergy Awareness Week this week.
“Parents, friends, even if you don’t have children – you don’t have to be a carer to be aware,” Ms Robertson said.
Ms Robertson’s two-year-old son Jett has a severe allergy to eggs and nuts and was diagnosed when he was 12 months old.
“When he was 12 months old he had an attack when I was making his cake. I just put a little bit of butter on my finger to put in his mouth and his whole face puffed up,” she said.
“My son only has to touch taps at school that someone who has held nuts has touched to have an attack.
“Parents need to educate children and not dismiss this.
“People don’t understand the severity of anaphylaxis.”
There are two anaphylaxis awareness courses operating in Bathurst but they only operate if enough people sign up.
One course is a first aid course run through St John Ambulance. It’s $30 and involves just a two hour lecture.
To sign up call Lynn Madden on 6331 9691.
The other course is a workshop through Bathurst TAFE.
Early childhood teacher and children’s author Sally Parsons presents the course which costs $40.
