Nine new names on honour board

IN years to come they will be remembered as being among the sporting elite of the Bathurst community.

A special ceremony on Tuesday night resulted in nine new names being added to the Bathurst District Sport and Recreation Council's (BDSRC) International Sports Honour Board.

Although many of the recipients couldn't be at the council chambers personally because of previous commitments to their chosen sport, they were represented by family and friends.

Mr Colin Mitford was also presented with a life membership pin to the sports council at the function.

According to Peter Cole from the BDSRC, about 50 people attended the presentation.

"Former Wallaby (rugby union) Marty Roebuck was presented with his medal as he was unable to attend the previous induction ceremony as he was away on World Cup commitments at the time," he said.

"The inductees were pretty humble about all the fuss, but we know they must have had a feeling of jubilation when they walked out the door.

"They should be proud of their achievements. They certainly do deserve to be recognised."

Mr Cole said it would be some years before another induction ceremony was held.

"Hopefully there will be plenty more international sporting honours come Bathurst's way in the not too distant future," he said.

"Bathurst has proved to be a real breeding ground for some great sportspeople and Tuesday night's function was testimony to that fact."

Among the names added to the International Sports Honour Board were Richard Hobson (triathlon), Ben and Damien Grabham (motorcycling), Toireasa Ryan (cycling), Archie Thompson (soccer), Kevin McDonald (motorcycling clerk of the course), Catriona Roach (rowing), Mark Renshaw (cycling) and Matthew Naylor (hockey).
