A PRISONER who denied he owned a mobile phone and SIM card found in his cell had used it to take a photo of himself.
The phone camera was also used to take a photo of the flexed bicep muscle of his arm.
Mario Fahaz, 26, plead guilty in Bathurst Local Court to possession of the phone introduced to the John Moroney Correctional Centre.
The phone was discovered by prison security officers during a search between 8am and 8.30am on February 21.
Solicitor Leigh Haywood said Fahaz had been found with the phone before his recent transfer to the Bathurst Gaol to serve out the remainder of a seven-and-a-half-year sentence.
Magistrate Thomas Hodgson dealt with the matter by way of a $570 fine ordering the phone to forfeited to the crown.
Magistrate Hodgson heard how prison security officers conducted a search of Cell 34 in Wing A2 at John Moroney Centre, Berkshire occupied by Fahaz from the previous day, February 19.
An officer from Northern Security Unit discovered the black Nokia phone with modified charger and SIM card secreted in a wall heater inside a white Oxo tobacco pouch.
Fahaz who was the only occupant of the cell denied the phone belonged to him.
However, an assistant superintendent at the gaol, Matthew Horan, switched the phone memory on to reveal two images, one was a photo of Fahaz taken at 10.43pm on Wednesday, February 20, the other a photo of the left biceps muscle of Fahaz’s arm taken at 10.44pm on the same date, while he was locked in his gaol cell.
A check had been made of the SIM card but no subscriber details were available.
However, six calls had been made from the phone including three text messages around 12.13am and 1.17am on Thursday.
