IT was a bright day at the Bathurst Rifle Range on Saturday for the FA Wilde Memorial Trophy in relation to both the weather and the winner.
A light, easterly breeze with minimal variation morphed into a rear fishtail wind with some subtle side-to-side movements.
Graeme Bright and Steve Williams continued their battles with John Cochrane pushing his name forward to challenge the leading pair. Bright started with a 50.03 possible to set a standard that neither Williams, (49.05), nor Cochrane (49.03), was able to match, but the margin was tight and the lead within reach.
Williams left the door ajar with a second dropped shot for a 49.03 and Cochrane pounced with only the second possible of the day, but the biggest in terms of centres.
Needing a bag of centre bulls-eyes and only having a one shot margin, Bright had a mid-stage fright, when an inner four split a run of centre bulls.
He needed all his experience to regroup and with two shots remaining, shot the pair of centre bull’s-eyes needed to clinch the day’s cock of the walk by a solitary centre bull.
Gordon Shepherd had an average day with scores of 47.03 and 49.02 while Sydney visitor Roland van Soest had stages of 46.03 and 44.03, the latter in fading light.
B grade saw Dennis Lavelle and Jan Sibera (with a new trigger) evenly matched with a pair of 47.03s.
Lavelle could only equal his first stage score and Sibera subsequently grabbed a one-point win with a 48.03.
Bella Townsend had a steady day with the subtle wind changes confusing her coach and contributing to stages of 43.01 and 44.02.
Keith Redding battled with his worn out barrel eventually cracking the 80-mark, despite another miss.
F class was a cakewalk for Geoff Willis who shot stages of 55 and 58, but Roger Northcott gave some semblance of competition to the class with a second stage 55.
John Coghill (101) was outclassed and needs to consider fitting a telescope or returning to the standard full bore discipline. Andrew Lord, with a pair of 50s, was more than happy with his return after equipment failures have dogged him in recent weeks.
Bright won the FA Wilde Trophy with 297¾ points just ahead of Cochrane and Sibera on 296½.
