BATHURST golfer Nathan King equalled the course record at Batemans Bay’s Catalina Country Club on Sunday to post an impressive top five finish at the 2008 Crown Larger PGA National Futures Championships.
One of the biggest tournaments for golf trainees, the event offered a total of $50,000 for the best of the field after four rounds and it attracted trainees from all states of Australia as well as New Zealand and the Republic of South Africa.
As the tournament was by invitation only and was mostly made up of second year trainees, Manly-based King part of a very strong field of 99 players.
Beginning last Thursday, King knew that after the first two rounds there was a projected cut of the top 50 players plus ties.
He made sure he was part of the weekend action as he fired twin even par rounds of 72, putting him well beyond the cut at eight over.
King’s third round on Saturday was again another even par 72, seeing him placed equal 21st with 18 holes remaining.
The Bathurst talent saved his best for last with a seven under 65, taking his four day score to 281. It was good enough to earn him a share of fifth and $2000.
It was a great result which emphasised King’s consistency over the last 12 months, a consistency that was further rewarded on Monday night.
King attended a golf trainee presentation dinner at St Michaels Golf Club where he was presented award for the Leading Order Of Merit Trainee for NSW.
He was also nominated for the 2009 NSW trainee captain.
