AN even par final round has seen Bathurst professional Peter O’Malley finish in a six-way tie for 24th at the BMW International Open in Munich, Germany, and put him in 106 position on the European Tour Order of Merit list.
After a scorching six-birdie, no-bogey opening round 66, O’Malley’s fortunes fluctuated at the Golflcub Muchen Eichenried with a three-over par 75 on Friday then a 68 to put him in tied 18th with a round to play.
His final round got off to a slow start as O’Malley bogeyed the third and fourth holes, both par fours, before a birdie on the seventh saw him go out one over the card.
Over the back nine O’Malley carded birdies on the 12th and 18th plus a third bogey on the 17th to finish with an even round at the par 72, 6361 metre course.
Taking into consideration the Bathurst professional only found six fairways off the tee and 11 greens in regulation, O’Malley did well to pull off an even round.
Victory in the event went to 23-year-old German Martin Kaymer, who held his nerve in a play-off against Anders Kaymer after both finished at 15 under the card.
Kaymer had looked poised for an easy win after firing 68, 63 and 67 over the first three rounds before his three over round of 75 yesterday saw him needing an extra hole to claim victory.
“It was very exciting today, but to be the first German to win this tournament is very special for me. It was a great support out there today, and I can’t wait to play next year,” Kaymer told europeantour.com
“To win in my country is very special for me. I was leading after three days with six shots, and they were gone after six, seven holes already, and I just kept fighting and brought it home.”
O’Malley finished the tournament with 17 birdies, 46 pars, eight bogeys and one double bogey as he picked up $19,990Euro for his efforts.
It was his third top 30 result since April after also placing tied 24th in the Irish Open and tied 23rd in the BMW Asian Open, taking his world golf ranking to 183rd.
