The future of hockey in the Bathurst region appears to be in good hands with nine players to compete at the NSW PSSA primary hockey tournament for girls to be held in Armidale in June.
Unfortunately for the Bathurst competitors they are not all playing together after they were chosen across three of the 14 teams that will contest the title.
Jamie Clarke, Amy Elms and Georgie McGregor were selected for the Polding side while Maddy Lippiatt, Jessica Hayward, and Alanna Weber as well as sisters Sarah and Jessica Watterson were chosen in the Western State Schools squad.
All Saints’ College student Maddison Hall is also off to the tournament as the sole Bathurst representative in the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) team.
Elms and her fellow team-mates were originally selected in the Polding team on May 1 and remembered the day long trial as being very tough.
“There were a lot of people trying out for the team and it was a really tough level of hockey,” she said. “I was really happy when they called my name at the end, I can’t wait to go away now.”
The Western and CIS players have had just as much time to let their selection sink in with their trials also held at the start of May.
Also travelling to Armidale will be Kelso High student Andrew Brown, who is expected to umpire a number of fixtures over the three days.
Former Western Region hockey manager Sue Watterson said because Bathurst has such a strong under 13 district team it was not a huge surprise to see so many players selected for the tournament.
“Both the first and second district teams are very strong this year,” she said.
“For this age group it is just fantastic to have such a large representation.
“It is really great for the town and for the girls selected.”
The NSW PSSA primary hockey tournament for girls will take place from June 17-19.
