CUP CAMPAIGNERS

FIVE Bathurst league players will run out for Group 10 tomorrow in the opening round of the 2008 Centenary Cup against Group 21 at Orange’s Wade Park.

Led by Panthers captain-coach Dave Elvy, the side also features his Panthers team-mate Nathan Rollinson and the St Pat’s trio of winger Cameron Plummer, and forwards Matt Lawson and Mark Elliott, who will both start from the bench.

Elliott in particular is unlucky to miss a starting spot after his demolition job against Panthers in last Sunday’s local derby.

For Plummer, who makes his debut in the side after completing the transition from rugby union to the 13-a-side game, the selection has justified his decision to leave Bathurst Bulldogs at the start of 2007.

“I’ve loved it [league] which is obviously why I decided to go around again this year – at this stage there have been no thoughts of going back,” the 24-year-old said ahead of his representative league debut.

“I was pretty excited to hear that I’d been picked, actually I was a little bit shocked to be honest.”

Despite the admission from coach Michael Rushworth that the team had been picked almost solely based on what has transpired so far in the 2008 season, Plummer thinks that his efforts last year played a big role in his selection.

“Last year would have definitely helped my chances, we [St Pat’s] had a pretty good season,” he said.

“I think my biggest strength as a winger is probably my ball running – that and getting the glory for everyone else’s good work,” he added with a laugh.

As a debutante for the side, Plummer admitted that he really knew very little of many of his team-mates so the presence of Elliott and Lawson has helped to ease the move into higher company.

“I don’t really know any of the other guys at all so having those two there has helped a lot, just to have a couple of familiar faces there with me,” he explained.

“It will be great to play with some of the guys in the team though and a good opportunity to mix things up a bit.”

The side has enjoyed two training sessions and will go into camp tonight before running onto Wade Park tomorrow at noon in what the side hopes will be a ticket to ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

Should Group 10 progress to the national country final (six matches away) they will get the chance to play the curtain-raiser for Origin III – a highlight in anyone’s estimations.

“We have spoken about winning each game and that reward at the end of it all, but in reality we’ve only trained a few times and need to concentrate on just winning this first match against Group 21,” Plummer said.
