I deserve another crack to prove critics wrong: Mason

WILLIE MASON believes he has done enough to silence his critics and earn another shot at Origin redemption.

Mason played the interstate decider under intense pressure to retain his place and responded by running 124 metres, the only NSW forward to notch triple figures.

Former Blues greats Brett Kenny and Tommy Raudonikis were stinging in their criticism in the lead-up to the match last Wednesday night, but Mason said he proved he could aim up on the big occasion.

"I played my best game of the series," Mason told The Sun-Herald. "If I'd come out and played like s--t, I'd have a good look at myself. You've got to learn to cop a bit of criticism, but it wasn't all justified.

"I didn't read many papers or watch much TV but I knew something was going on in the background with Tommy and a few ex-players. It doesn't really bother me.

"It was a bit disappointing, but I won't bag them. They've got a right to their opinion and it's not the end of the world.

"If we won, they'd sit back and say, 'Look, we fired him up'. I can cop criticism sweet. If I had came out and played awful, I would've been pretty disappointed in myself.

"I thought I played all right, we just didn't get any reward in the end."

Asked if he believed he deserved another shot in a Blues jersey, Mason replied: "Yeah, it's a year away but I'll probably be a better footballer.

"You learn from things and at the Roosters, Freddy [coach Brad Fittler] is making me a lot better player."

Mason, a captaincy candidate for next year's series, said he was desperate for another crack at the Maroons.

"We've got to win, no one has ever lost four series in a row," he said. "We're on the verge of being on the wrong side of history. We need to fix that up and have a year to think about it.

"It's disappointing to lose, especially for Beds [outgoing skipper Danny Buderus]. No one can say enough about him. Whoever says anything negative about him is a c---head.

"We played well but it was just some individual brilliance that got us. What do you do when you defend your arse off and Israel Folau jumps 10 metres in the air? We controlled for a good part of the game and that's what is so disappointing. The bell went and I was like, 'Oh, are you serious - again?"'
